Cuba Day 1: Arrival

Our flight out to Cayo Coco was at 0630 which meant that we had to wake up really early in the morning to catch our flight. I had debated whether to drive to the airport in my shorts and sandals but figured that pants and shoes would make more sense. Besides, we should be able to change into shorts once we got to the resort so there was no need to worry about being uncomfortable.

After we got to the airport, I realized that we had forgotten our waterproof camera. This would prove to be annoying because I was unable to take pictures or videos of any of the coral reef or fishes I saw underwater.

The flight to Cuba was fairly uneventful, but when we got to the resort, we were told that our rooms were not ready yet. Okay, we should be able to chill out in the dining hall for lunch no? No. The (air conditioned) dining hall was not open for lunch yet. The only thing that was available was the open air snack bar. Great. Even in the shade, I was starting to sweat through my shirt and my pants and socks were starting to feel more like wet towels than clothing. The food on the other hand was no bad! We were warned ahead of time by many MANY people that the food in Cuba was terrible. So, with our lowered expectations we were surprised to find that the snack bar food was not terrible. The ketchup was kind of brown, and they had no lettuce in their salad, but not terrible.

We eventually gave up waiting for our room and changed into something less sweat inducing in the washroom and walked around the resort for a bit. I was able to find some post cards (after quite a bit of hand waving and searching for someone who understood English). Once we did get our room Maggie took a nap while I took a look at the beach. I was able to take a quick dip in the ocean off the pier and found the water incredibly warm.

Dinner in the dining hall was also pleasantly surprising. The food was actually decent, but Maggie had done her research and chose a resort which had good reviews of the food.

That night the show was a tribute to Michael Jackson. The dancers did a decent job, even though it did not look as polished as other Michael Jackson tributes we have seen. After the show, Maggie and I went out to the beach to look at the stars, which shone brilliantly in front of the glow of the milky way. The moon was waning after the last quarter so we were able to see the night sky in all it's brilliance. If it weren't for the bugs, we probably would have stayed out longer to watch for shooting stars, although Maggie said that she saw one during the brief moment we were out star gazing.
