Punta Cana Day 1: Arrival

I had arranged to pick up Hwan and Ben around 0630 to drive us all to the airport. I had packed everything I could think of: snorkel, water shoes, sunscreen, sandals, etc. I also packed a lot of shirts and shorts. What I forgot to pack was more formal wear for some of the restaurants in the resort.

But in any case, we were warned by Elena that there were weight restrictions on both the checked luggage (18 kg) and carry on luggage as well (5 kg)! I managed to squeak under both limits, but the bride and groom's party had quite a bit of reorganization to do as their carry on was way over the limit.
 
We spent the greater part of the time at the airport waiting on them to reorganize but we couldn't help as our luggage was at the limit or too small to be of any use. We did help convert some cash though.
 
The flight was uneventful as was the bus ride. Check in was strange as the reception area was not like any of the other tropical reception areas the I had been to before: it was tiny and air conditioned.
 
Oh, Christine was scared of this giant moth, so I picked it up and it latched on to my sleeve.
 
In any case, it took a while to get in to our rooms and it wasn't until I went exploring before I discovered that our rooms (except for a few special people) were all situated on basically a mini resort separated from the main resort by a lake. It is about a five minute was (or ten minute wait and cart ride) to get to the lobby of the main resort! On top of that, it was still another five minute walk to the main dining hall and another five minute walk to the beach!

Still, so far the food is not bad, and service is friendly. Let's see if I can catch up on sleep and work.

It took so long that there was a chance we needed to go to the hospital. So I am used to the soft chimes that you hear in the neighborhood when the ice cream truck comes by. This year we already had three visits, mostly on cold or rainy moments of the day. This was in contrast to the infrequent visits to our old neighborhood when I was a child. In addition, we were too poor to really enjoy a cone of soft ice cream when it did show up so I never built up that sense of tradition that others would share with their children. As suck, when the truck does drive by, I don't rush out to grab a cone for my kids. Also, the pandemic does not help either. Still, maybe one day this summer we will indulge our kids. Maybe. Oh, but that was beside the point. Today I heard the ringing of a bell. This was not the sound I'm used to for an ice cream truck so I decided to investigate with Serena. Mostly vaxxed.

So most of the family is vaccinated now. Serena is the lone outlier, and that is due to her age. Because of that, we have decided to keep her with my parents and not send her to daycare anymore until she gets both of her shots. We had pulled her out when Omicron hit this winter and was pretty hard when we tried keeping her at home, but now that Maggie is back at work we had to go back to sending her to my parents. This situation may be the norm for a while as the under five trials for the Pfizer vaccine have not gone very well. She does not really know much about what she is missing, but she really needs to build up those social skills and daycare is a great place for learning to communicate with her peers, whether physically, or virally. But with cases at the daycare every couple of weeks or so, we figure that it is best to wait just a little bit longer..
