Los Angeles Day 5: Universal Studios Hollywood
Maggie had told me about Universal Studios Hollywood while we were at Universal Studios Orlando and mentioned how the Hollywood studio tour was much better in LA than it was in Orlando. As such, I wanted to check out this place for a while now. We decided to make a whole day of it and went early in the morning. However, getting up early was rather difficult despite being jet lagged to wake up three hours early.
It took us two hours to drive over from the house. Traffic was not great and we could have taken advantage of the HOV lanes if I had a better idea where they were and which ones we could use (we had three people in the car so they should be free for us). The signage for the HOV lanes was a bit of a hit and miss. I am sure if we had stayed a month I would have been much better at using them.
The first thing we checked out when we arrived was Kung Fu Panda at the DreamWorks theatre. As we could not carry Elsy on one of the shaking chairs, we ended up sitting on the stationary seats instead. Too bad! Elsy seemed to enjoy it well enough though. After we got out, we headed to Hogsmeade. The place looked pretty much exactly like the setup at Orlando when we went several years ago. The wait time for Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey was much too long so we grabbed lunch at the Three Broomsticks before checking out the WaterWorld show.
Later on, we checked out the Super Silly Fun Land which was right up Elsy's alley but we were surprised that she did not want to play in the water park. Instead, she spent her time in the playground. Afterward, got some drinks from Starbucks and lined up for the Holleywood Studio Tour.
Just as Maggie implied years ago, this tour was much better than the one in Orlando. It was much longer, included a lot of actual sets that were used in shows and movies, and included a lot of animated areas that were probably a little too shocking for Elsy. One part with dinosaurs really scarred the kid and she has been afraid of dark tunnels ever since.
We were able to get in on the last Universal's Animal Actors show, but Elsy was getting very antsy at that time so we had to leave early and exit the theme park.
Continuing the theme from yesterday, we wanted to try out food in the area we were in rather than going back to the house to find sustenance so we decided to check out a Cuban bakery that was recommended to us called Porto's Bakery. The original plan was to pick up food and bring it back to the house to eat. However, due to the time it would take to drive back, the long line ups, and the fact that it was already getting late, we decided to eat there instead.
We ordered quite a lot of stuff, like the potato balls and the meat pies, but we also ordered a couple of dishes which meant that we had a lot of food to take back home after we had our fill at the restaurant. The food was really good. I liked the potato balls, and I would have liked to try more of the baked goods but we really did order too much and I thought we might come back another time. (Spoiler: We did not.)
