Los Angeles Day 8: Hollywood and Family Dinner
Today was another "off" day where we were able to sleep in a little bit. These sleep ins are useful as each day has been packed with so much adventure that we barely have time to rest! The plan was to take part in a Hollywood Behind-the-Scenes Tour by Red Line Tours at noon.
However, we had a rude awakening when we found out that our rental car had a flat tire. (The front tire on the driver's side.) Fortunately Bonnie had noticed this as they were leaving and gave us the heads up as well as a tire pump we could use to fill the tire. I was able to get out early, find a tire repair shop nearby, and got the tire fixed for a very reasonable price of $10. I was also able to get the tank filled but had no luck finding any post cards. As such, I did not really get to sleep in, and we were worried that we would be late for the tour so Maggie rescheduled it.
In the end, with the help of the GPS and HOV lanes, we were actually able to make our original scheduled tour time of noon. Our tour guide walked us around to a number of the famous Hollywood movie spots and filled us with historical knowledge of movie making in Hollywood and the area itself.
Due to the cost of parking in Hollywood, and lack of time, we decided not to stick around to check out some of the other spots we had already paid for like the TCL Chinese Theatres Guided Tour, Madame Tussauds Hollywood, the Hollywood Museum, or the Dolby Theatre Guided Tour, but headed to the Griffith Observatory instead.
Our trip to the observatory was cut short due to our lunch stop, and the parking lot next to the observatory being full. In addition, Elsy fell asleep so we all decided to nap in the car until she was done hers. We spent an hour or so in the parking lot or looking for parking before heading up the hill on the shuttle bus to see the observatory. The shuttle bus was cheap: $0.25 per person, and air conditioned, which was so worth it considering how hot it would have been to push Elsy on her stroller up the hill in the blazing sun.
The observatory itself was quite well done, and I am sure that I would have enjoyed it immensely when I was a child, as there were many exhibits on space and physics.
We only stayed for an hour, as we had dinner plans with Maggie's family at the Three Family Village restaurant. Uncle Patrick came to visit Maggie's aunt for a few days so we decided that it would be a good time to get the whole family together as this was generally a rare occurrence.
